  • Thank you to the organisers and presenters at the AD4E Online Festival on Friday.

We were invited to question whether a ‘diagnosis and disorder’ model in mental health is the best method for understanding people’s distress and for helping them with their suffering. We also thought about why this model is so prolific, and the structures/ institutions that may sustain this as the dominant narrative and culture of care.

Important questions, a lot to think about, and over the weekend, I was also remembering this principle from the American writer, Clay Shirky:

“Institutions will try to preserve the problem to which they are solution”

  • In 2022, we published a book for voice-hearers that aimed to create a warm and caring tone for the reader and a respectful tone for their voices.

We have seen so much suffering come as a result of the conflicts and battles that people are caught up in in the relationship with their voices - challenging them, suppressing them, demonising and attempting to eliminate them - day after day.

We wanted to offer an option for readers that shifted the voice-hearing relationship - away from viewing voices as the enemies, towards considering their potential roles as allies in understanding our fears and emotional conflicts, and in finding out ways in which we can help.

If you’d like to find out more, we have a dedicated website for the book here:

  • This has been one of the most powerful experiences of my career, working so closely and intensively with these US psychosis teams over a long period (mainly through case consultation groups, but also training and leadership coaching groups too).

I've learnt so much about the US mental health system and the different challenges faced by people with psychosis, their families, staff, and organisations/providers, compared to here in the UK NHS.

What's not different is the significant need for more compassionate and trauma-informed approaches, and huge credit to Michigan state EIP teams for having the courage to take this on and to embed CFT into your treatment options.

Today I had a wonderful opportunity to reflect on this work, on compassion, and on CFT for Psychosis in a recorded interview that will hopefully be used as part of their in-house staff trainings.

Thank you Michigan!
